The Steuben County Jail was built in 1992. It is designed to house 130 inmates. The jail has 24 full time officers and six part time officers. The Steuben County Work Release Center has 11 full time officers. All full time officers are required to complete a one-week jailers school accredited by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
Some of the Services Provided to Inmates:
Medical Care
We provide routine health care to the inmates through the services of a licensed family practitioner and an LPN. The Physician conducts sick call weekly. The nurse comes in daily and screens medical requests, consults with the physician and then advises us on what health services need to be provided.
Mail Services
Outgoing mail is collected daily by the jail staff and mailed. All outgoing mail is stamped to indicate that an inmate of our facility mailed it. Incoming mail is received, opened, inspected, sorted and then distributed to the inmates. Inmates of this facility are not allowed to receive mail from inmates in any other confinement facility.
Sending Mail to an Inmate
Letters sent to the jail should be formatted the following way:
(Inmates Name)

Meals
The kitchen staff prepares all meals. We have 3 full time cooks. Meals are prepared in accordance with a master menu approved by a licensed dietician.
