An application for a handgun permit may be received between the hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday thru Friday at the main office of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department.

Guidlines:

·  You must live in Steuben County outside of any city limits. Persons living inside any city limits of Steuben County must apply at their city police department.

·  Must be 18 years of age or older.

·  Must not have a felony conviction.

·  Must bring a valid ID.

·  You cannot renew your gun permit prior to 30 days before the permit expires.

Processing:

1. Please have the above-mentioned items with you when you arrive at the sheriff’s department.

2. When filling out the application, remember to press firmly. You will be making three (3) copies.

3. After you complete the application, a clerk will notarize it for you and you will be fingerprinted.

4. The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department will the conduct a background check, process the application and forward the application to the State of Indiana Firearms Section.

5. The State of Indiana will mail the permit directly to you. This can take anywhere from four (4) to twelve (12) weeks.
