Overview

Steuben County EMS is a 24-hour paramedic service serving all of Steuben County. Steuben County covers 336 square miles with six city/towns. Steuben County has a population of approximately 35,000 with an increase during the summer months of over 100,000 people. The Emergency Medical Service is an entity of Steuben County Government. The county subsidizes all of the services provided by Steuben County EMS and any generated revenues are returned to the county general fund. All processes performed by this department are under the supervision of a department head appointed by the county commissioners.

Our department has 16 full-time employees, 14 of which are paramedic and 2 advanced EMT’s. All individuals are certified by the Indiana State EMS Commission, and A.C.L.S. and P.A.L.S. certified through the American Heart Association. We employee 15 part-time employees ranging from emergency medical technician basic to emergency medical technician paramedic. Our office staff consists of two ladies that handle all of the billing for the EMS department.

Our service also relies strongly on volunteer fire departments to supply rescue and medical assistance responses with the EMS department. There are seven departments that supply medical assistance and are carrying at least one automatic external defibrillator on their units.

Steuben County EMS has two stations within Steuben County. The majority of the units are housed at the original station on South Martha Street in Angola. The second location is on State Road 120 in the north portion of the county. The second station acts as a floating station, so as run volume increases, the north unit is moved to respond anywhere within the county.
